Back in the Groove and UEA Weekend

Wow!! Let's see if I still remember how to do this! It has been a LONG time and A LOT has happened! After spending a couple of hours the other night looking through this blog and reading through it, I was motivated to start blogging again. I am not great at journal writing (something I am going to work on) and so I realized how precious this blog was when I could go back years ago and see what our family was doing. I cried through it and laughed through it. It really touched my heart and was fun to see how we have grown!

We have had a pretty busy year with having a baby, dealing with breast cancer and then remodeling our home. My plate was FULL, but now I think I am at a place where I can do this, and I am excited about it! I just want my family to know how much I love them and I want to record our special memories. As I went through breast cancer, I thought a lot about all that our family has been through and I really want them to remember the fun times as well as those tough times that help us to be better people.

Anyway... it is 10:00 pm at night and as much as I want to blog about the 1000's of pictures I have of the last year, I am going to start with our most recent weekend. We spent most of this last week up at Snowbird with some dear friends of ours. It was gorgeous! Talmage and Braden trailed behind a couple of days due to school, but still got some fun in when they arrived. We played outside, swam, spent lots of time in the hot-tubs, talked, enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and renewed friendships! It was wonderful... until the flu hit! Thursday night, Caleb woke up in the middle of the night with the stomach flu. We got him settled and about 20 minutes later, Lila woke up with the stomach flu. We got her settled - actually Talmage was a champion through this all because while I was helping the kids over the toilet, he was cleaning up all the barf that didn't make it in. And there was A LOT! I think I had the better job FOR SURE! Anyway, after we got Lila settled, Emma woke up with the stomach flu. It was a LONG night. We just went from child to child to laundry and back to child to child ALL NIGHT LONG! In the morning, it hit me! I tried to talk myself out of it, but it didn't work. UGH! There is nothing worse. Luckily, it was only a 12 hr bug. Thankfully, Braden and Collin escaped it, but It caught up with Talmage when we got home :( poor guy.

The day before, my friend Michelle and I had an amazing day. It started with some Tai Chi and meditation (that was great!), up to the spa for some herbal tea with the most beautiful view of the mountain and chit chatted, off to a pedicure, then down to the poolside to do some reading and later that night out to dinner with our husbands! It was just about as perfect of a day that you can get. It made getting the flu bearable.

Wow! What an intense couple of weeks it has been. After learning that I had breast cancer, I was scheduled for surgery immediately. I still had a month before the baby was due, but right after the surgery, my braxton hicks turned into real contractions. Surgery was on a Wednesday and by Saturday, I was miserable. The contractions were strong, but too spread apart to justify going to the hospital. I kept praying that either they would stop or get close together so that I could go to the hospital. At the same time, in the back of my mind, I knew that this was early for the baby and I wanted to make sure she would be alright.
Around 3:00 am Sunday morning, during a hefty contraction, my water broke ... or exploded would be more accurate. Aaaahhhh. We were going to have a baby. I was nervous and relieved all at once.
We got to the hospital, checked in, and then I labored for about an hour while we waited for the Anesthesiologist - who happened to be our neighbor. The epidural was perfect and FINALLY I could sleep. I felt like it had been months since I had gotten any real rest. It was wonderful!
(I just don't know how the pioneers did it!)
Because I was so early, they had to treat me with Penicillin for 4 hours before they could turn on the Pitosin. Once all of the penicillin was in, they turned up the Pit and at 8:01 am, our sweet little Emma Jane was born. She is perfect and a true miracle in everyway possible. She weighed 7 lbs. and was 19 1/2" long. We were astonished at her size for being 4 weeks early. We truly feel that Heavenly Father prepared her so that she would be ready to come early because of all that is going on. We are so grateful that everything went so beautifully.

Facing the Truth ... Breast Cancer

Two weeks ago I learned that I had Breast Cancer. It was quite a shock to say the least. I started a blog so I could keep a journal of everything and as a way to share information with friends and family. We have seen miracles... for which I am SO thankful. It will be a tough few months, but I feel peace that we will get through this. We have had an outpouring of support, love and prayers. THANK YOU!

Happy 11th Birthday Collin!

We had a fun birthday party for Collin. He was so excited to turn 11! For his "birthday dinner" he wanted to make homemade pizza's, so we fired up the grill and grilled indivdual pizzas. It was fun and tasty!

Summer Fun

At our family reunion this year, Caleb found a nice mud puddle to spend his day in. As messy as it was, it turned out to be perfect. He hardly wandered and I could sit and enjoy catching up with my family. Thank you mud puddle!

For our Summer Cooking Day, Braden chose to make Homemade Strawberry Sherbert. We had fun and the sherbert was a perfect way to enjoy a hot summer day. For the recipe, click here!

Lila all dressed up for our niece's wedding reception. The mother-of-the-bride bought gloves and parasols for all the little girls. They walked around like princesses. It was darling.

Family Reunion in Nauvoo

We just got back from a wonderful family reunion in Nauvoo, Illinois. It was amazing and so great to share this experience with family. We all flew into St. Louis and went to the Gateway Arch. We went all the way to the top - which is 630 ft.! Then we headed over to Hannibal and took a ferry ride down the Missouri River - just like Huckleberry Fin. So fun! Our next few days were spent in historic Nauvoo, Illinois. It was touching to walk where pioneers walked, to hear their stories, to see their beautiful community and to gain a small glimpse of their many sacrifices. On our last day, we went to Carthage Jail. This was truly a spiritual experience.

Lila has recently started taking art classes. She LOVES it! She is always drawing, creating, writing notes and making everything around her beautiful. This is her 2nd painting from art class. We were all pretty blown away. She wanted to have it framed and give it to her dad for Father's Day. What a treasure.

Father's Day

For Father's Day I wanted to surprise Tal with pictures of the kids. He has had 16" X 20" frames sitting in his office for months. So, we had a day of picture taking. And yes, it took a lot of the day. Caleb was ... well a 3 year old. Out of probably 100 pictures there was only 1 with him looking at the camera and sort of smiling. Good thing he's cute.
Tal loved his Father's Day gift! We blind folded him and each of the kids held up their picture in front of their heads. They all looked like bobble heads with these little bodies. It was fun!

Scout Camp

The second week of June, Braden headed out to scout camp with his dad the Scout Master. I don't know how I didn't get a picture of the two of them together. I will fix that. Tal looks so cute in his scout outfit... complete with a cool hat that makes him look really official.
Braden had a great time with his buddies and earned 5 merit badges! Apparently, Braden rocked the shot gun merit badge. Talmage said he obliterated the clay pigeons. It was a proud moment for the Papa!

A Few Highlights of the Past Few Months...

Finally I am getting back to blogging! I had some computer frustrations and I just was not feeling well. Thankfully, I am over the "sick" part of being pregnant and am semi functional again. I have missed A LOT (ugh) , but here are a few highlights of what we have been up to.

We've been singing, "All I want for my birthday are my two front teeth!

When the Tooth Fairy came on the second tooth, she said she felt the little fairy going underneath her pillow and she didn't dare open her eyes because she didn't want to "break the promise" Phew!

Baby Animal Days. Caleb was begging to take a bunny home... it was tempting, but we thought Charlie (our dog) might think it was a stuffed animal... which he tears to shreds!

We had a hole dug to put an in-ground tampoline in. We had a huge pile of dirt and Caleb was in HEAVEN digging with his shovel. (I promise he started out with clothes on)

This is our second year of walking the Race For the Cure. I love it! It is amazing to be there and be a part of something so big. There are so many brave people in the world.

Braden and Collin built this snow cave all by themselves and were SO anxious to sleep in it. I was a nervous wreck all night... You can see they had a terrible time.

St. Lucia

For our 15 year anniversary we celebrated in St. Lucia. It was beautiful! We stayed at the Sandals resort - which was great. Everything was included and created a totally stress-free vacation. We had lots of fun exploring and relaxing by the pool.

A Baby Miracle

We are expecting our 5th baby! Without going into all the details, let me just say that it was nothing short of a miracle. We are now anxiously awaiting the arrival of this little person that is due sometime the end of September. That sounds so far away, but hopefully with a busy up-coming summer these months will melt away.... At least I would LOVE for the next 4 weeks to disappear so I can stop feeling so gross. It's crazy to me that something so small - like the size of a kidney bean - can make me feel so miserable. No appetite, yet starving. On the verge of hugging the toilet all day. Completely exhausted as if I had just ran a marathon. Bionic senses that prove to my destruction.... However, despite all of the grossness, I feel truly blessed.

On Valentine's Day we finally told our children. I put the letter's "B A B Y" in 4 balloons. I told the kids that we had one more Valentine's Day surprise, but they had to unscramble the letters to figure it out. Each child got a balloon to pop and then once they had all the letters, they went to work. It didn't take them long. It was a fun way to share the news with them and they were all really excited. Especially Lila. She is begging for the baby to be in her room with her.

My computer is taking on a mind of it's own and it is driving me crazy! It is doing things so weird and not posting the way it normally does so I can't figure out how to get the text by the picture that I want to talk about! Anyway..... Here are a few pictures of some of the fun things that we have been up to. Crazy bubble baths. A day of ski lessons for the kids. Talmage took the older ones up and little Caleb and I went to meet them for lunch. It was a beautiful day and my heart was bursting to see them on the slopes. This was Lila's first time and she did amazing! We had a fun Book Group with lots of good company and food:). Caleb figured out how to climb out of his crib. It was a sad day for me, so we got him a Thomas the Tank bed because he LOVES and I mean LOVES trains. He is making a nice transition afterall. Phew!

A Few Lesson's

I have been having seriously guilty feelings about my Blog. I am SO behind (birthday's, holiday's, special occasions, funny moments, sad moments...) I kept thinking that I would play catch-up, but I just don't see it happening anytime soon. SO... I am pushing all the guilt out of my mind and starting fresh tonight. I do still have a glimmer of hope that I will at least post pictures to highlight the past couple of months, but for now, I am going to focus just on today!

There will be no pictures with this post. Just a heart felt sharing of feelings and emotions.
Today I did not have the greatest start to my day. Thankfully, it is Sunday and I was able to attend church. This was the tender mercy that I needed. It was a day of lessons that seemed to be just for me. I wanted to write down some of the things that I learned because I really feel like they were personal messages to me and future generations.
1. In Sunday School, we discussed Doctrine and Covenants 27: 15-18 dealing with putting on the armor of God. Our instructor gave a brief history of armor and how it evolved into stronger and stronger armor because of new weaponry. As the threat evolved, so there was a need to have a greater defense. So it is today. The threat against family, morality, honesty, integrity, virtue ... and the list goes on and on... are real threats and always have been. However, the mode of deliverance of these threats is so much more pervasive than has been in past generations. It is there - even when you don't want it to be there. The idea of evil taking on good appearances is all around us. Low standard television shows, movies, music, internet etc. While these things can also provide wonderful and even uplifting opportunities, we must protect ourselves and teach our children how to protect themselves from the negative influences around. This includes having a "higher level" of Family Home Evenings. That phrase, "higher level" has resonated in my mind all day and has sparked a desire to do better and to help my children find, recognize and utilize the Armor of God. It is our only sure defense.
2. In Relief Society our lesson was taken from a talk given by Douglas Callister titled "Our Refined Heavenly Home". It was wonderful. It gave me such vision, direction, hope, motivation and desire! I could not do it justice to parapharse, but something that stuck out to me in our discussion was the importance of physically holding a book. Of turning it's pages, reading the words, feeling the emotions of the book and the sense of accomplishment when you turn the last page. With all of the electronic devices (which are NOT totally bad) our children are losing their sight on these masterpieces. If we don't encourage them and set the example for them to hold, read and cherish books and other "refined and beautiful things", THEIR children will lose them completely. These things must be protected for ourselves and for future generations.

These were just a couple of the things that I learned and felt today. I came home with such a greater desire to be a good wife and mother. To use a softer voice. To make better use of my time. To focus on my relationship with God and family. I felt God's love today and I am grateful for these teaching moments and tender mercy's that help me to be a little more like He knows I can be.

Somewhere UNDER the Rainbow

We had a wonderful rain storm the other day. Clouds rolled in, the wind howled, lightening sparked and the rain pounded. When we lived in Pittsburgh, I didn't love rain storms because it rained every day and when there was a thunderstorm, it felt like it was 20 ft. over your house. Scary! But here, it is delightful. I would welcome more - if they came. After the storm, we walked out to see a beautiful rainbow right above our home. We felt like it was a gift.

A Few Happenings

Between these two items, many hours pass through the day quickly! You can see how beat up his car is. The spider gives me the creeps, but he loves it.

Girls night out! We had fun, eating, shopping and going to the movie.

Boys night out. We enjoyed an evening under the stars watching Jon Schmidt perform. It was inspiring, hilarious and just plain fun.

My boys were highly motivated to start back at the piano. They have taken a few months break due to the move and this is just what they needed to get them excited about it again. Collin Turns Double Digits

Collin turned 10 this month and it was a BIG deal... I mean, he is officially in the double digits! He was so excited. We had a great day celebrating. We woke up and had Hootenanny Pancakes and Collin got to sit at the head of the table with the "You are Special" plate. He ate on that plate all day long. That night Grandma and Grandpa came to have dinner with us... pot roast, potatoes, carrots, rolls, salad, cake and ice cream. A feast fit for a hungry, growing 10 year old.
Collin: Has a smile and dimples to melt your heart, a giggle that is contagious, is a great big brother, loves bugs and all animals, is concerned for others and totally lovable. I love you, Collin.

Last Days of Summer

Every year we go up to Snowbird with Grandma Kathy and Grandpa Bart. This year was particularly fun because Talmage got to come along. For the past ... oh.. let's see...10 years or so,he has had to miss it because of some test he had to study for. (SO happy those are over!) We had fun relaxing, playing Scrabble, reading, cooking and enjoying the beautiful mountains! I love it there! Thanks Mom and Dad for the fun memories :)
One of the days we did venture away from Snowbird and found ourselves on a lake. Talmage had a serious itch to go water skiing. We had a great time ... except for when my dad nearly lost his fingers! This was the first time we had been on the lake as a family in probably 8 years. Much to my surprise, Braden popped up on a board first try. Oh, did he have a proud PaPa ... and Mom. Collin hit it hard on the inner tube and we had a blast. It has been a great and BUSY summer. Here's a few pictures of all of the fun.

Alright, my cute friend, Brittney Smith, tagged me for this book tag because I "have good taste". Well, HERE is proof of that ... First of all, here is what you do:

The book most handy to me is, "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince". I know, I know.... REALLY GOOD TASTE (for a 10 year old.) However, I love this book. I have this thing for Harry Potter and I have done a really good job at stringing out reading the books just before the movies come out. I am just not ready for Harry to be over. I think I am one of few people on the planet that does NOT know the ending of Harry Potter. For me, these books are like The Neverending Story. You know, when Sebastian opens the book to read, he becomes a living part of the story. Little does Harry know, I have been there along with him flying on the broom, walking the halls of Hogwarts, heart pounding under the Invisibility Cloak while Professor Snape walks by, gritting my teeth at the mere mention of Voldemort and fighting him face to face. I just love Harry. I love how brave he is, what a great friend he is, and how he is always ready to do the right thing - even when his life is in danger. So, here is the quote from the book ... it is not an impressive quote unless you know what Harry had just gone through ... I just detest Malfoy!

Summer Catch-Up

To say it has been a busy summer would be a bit of an understatement! Hence, the month and a half blogging break. Now that we are getting settled I am hoping to catch up on some of the highlights of the summer. There are a ton of pictures, but I felt I had to add them for when I print off my blog at the end of the year. So, here goes...

First of all, we moved into our new home the middle of July. It is a great feeling to finally feel settled. We really feel like we were guided to this home and neighborhood and have received such a warm welcome. We love it!

This is Charlie, the newest member of our family. We love him and Caleb loves eating doggy food and crawling in his kennel. It seriously grosses me out!

New Puppy

After many YEARS of begging for a puppy, we just surprised our children with this cutie. I didn't think I was that much of a "dog person", but this little guy has won my heart. While I was away with the kids on vacation, "T" found this puppy on the internet and called me to see if I was interested. What?!! A dog?!! We're trying to move!! Bad timing! Then, without warning, I was suddenly finding myself hoping that "T" would go and get it. So, I kept calling and asking if he had. My phone calls pushed him right out the door and out to buy a dog. The kids were so excited and surprised when we got home from our trip to see him playing in our back yard. They are all in love with him. We are all excited to have him as a part of our family.
He (we have yet to decide on a name ... any suggestions?) is a Newfoundland which will grow to be a really big dog. They are suppose to be really great with children. You know "NaNa" the nurse dog on Peter Pan? She is a Newfoundland. Now, if only I could teach this puppy to do the laundry, clean up the toys and tuck the kids into bed. Well, I'll just be happy if we can teach him to not tinkle on the carpet!

Deep In The Heart Of Texas

A couple of weeks ago, I went on a road trip with my mom and children to go and see my sister. We had so much fun! The kids played and swam hard (minus a couple of days for our #1 due to a very bad sunburn ... the kind that doesn't allow you to lift your arms, or put a shirt on for 3 days :( Thanks goodness for Silverdine (sp) it saved his skin! My mom, sister and I got pedicures, hair cuts, ate awesome food, played Scabble, tried new recipes, went to see Andrea Bocelli and Il Divo. It was so much fun. Thanks Mom and Big Sis, for such fun memories. I love you both SO MUCH! Can't wait for a rematch in Scrabble! :)

After working very hard, Collin earned his yellow belt in his Tae Kwon Do class. He was so excited and felt a real sense of accomplishment. I was so proud of him. In order to earn his yellow belt, in addition to passing off his forms and kicks, he had to write and essay on the history of Tae Kwon Do and its 5 tenents which are: Self Control, Courtesy, Perseverance, Integrity, and Indomitable Spirit. His instructor told the class that he had written one of the best essays she had read. He was beaming. Great job, Collin!

Last weekend was the traditional Father's and Son's camp out. The boys always look forward to this time when they get to hang out with dad, eat junk food galore, sleep in their clothes and not be nagged by moi to brush their teeth. They had a great time.

While they were gone, Lila and I played a fierce game of Scrabble :), Guess Who, had snacks, and read books in bed until we both fell asleep. We had a great time, too.

Each Memorial weekend my husbands side of the family gets together and visits graves of loved ones. It is a time of unity, love and gratitude for those who have gone on before and a time to reflect on the wonderful legacy they have left for each of us. As we visit each grave, we learn about that person, look at pictures, sing one of their favorite songs, read a favorite poem or share one of their favorite treats. I think it is safe to say that we all love visiting Grandma Nonie's grave where we share chocolate covered orange sticks. That lady has good taste! It was a great day.

A Bear Award and Spring Piano Recital

Tonight was a big night for the older Shill boys. To start off, Collin recieved his Bear in Cub Scouts. He has worked hard and I am so proud of him. It was great to be together as a family to show our support for his achievement. Way to go, Collin!
Right after Cub Scouts, Braden and Collin had their Spring Piano Recital. They were both amazing. Their little fingers FLY on the piano. They have put a lot of hours into practicing and it is paying off. Way to go, Boys!

Race For The Cure

Last Saturday, May 9, 2009, My family and my Mom and Dad participated in the Race for the Cure in Salt Lake City. It was an amazing experience to be a part of something so huge and so meaningful. I was touched by the sea of people that were there. There were people of all shapes, sizes and ages. It was awesome! Most people wore a paper on their back that either said, "In Memory of ...." or "In Celebration of ...." I even saw a sign that said, "In Memory of My Dad" I couldn't believe it. This is a disease that strikes anybody at anytime. My childhood friend was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at age 34 while 5 months pregnant with her son. She and her son are doing well and I am in awe of her and all who fight this disease. They are so brave. It was a special day to spend together doing something so worthwhile. It is something my family and I will always remember and are already looking forward to participating next year.

Women's Conference and Happy Birthday to Me!

It has been a crazy couple of weeks and I have missed blogging - especially because I have had some really great experiences. My normal routine of checking out some fun blogs that I follow were replaced with complete OCD looking for a home to buy. I spent many hours on the computer, many hours in the car driving neighborhoods (my poor children), and many hours on my knees! I am happy to say, I think we have found a home.... FINALLY! More to come on that later ....
Anyway... my birthday weekend happened to be the same weekend as Women's Conference at BYU. It was fabulous! I got to spend 2 days with my mom! That in itself was the best gift. Just being able to walk around the beautiful campus, trees in bloom, nice cool breeze, eating BYU fudge and snarfing down Costa Vida salads in-between sessions was something I will always remember. We hooked up with my wonderful Mother-in-law and Sisters-in law. One of my sisters-in-law, Marsali Hancock, was a presenter on Internet Safety for children. I highly recommend checking out her information. It is so important to know what your children are doing and how to keep them safe on the internet, cell phones and video games. You can find her information here.
My birthday was full of gifts of friendship and love. As I walked on campus, nearly every corner I turned, there was somebody special from my past. It was so wonderful to see so many dear friends. My heart was bursting with gratitude. On top of all that, the messages that were given, the Spirit that I felt, overwhelmed me. IT IS WHAT I NEEDED! I left that conference feeling renewed, more committed, grateful to be a woman, grateful to be a mother, and grateful to be a Daughter of God.
Here are some things that stood out to me:
* The theme was, "In The Strength of the Lord"
* "Our season for strength is right now!"
* "You can't force your children to heaven, but you could force them to hell, by harsh words"
* "We empower the faith of our children as we live faithfully"
* "Faith is not only a feeling, it is a decision"
* "Fear and faith can not co-exist"
* "We have to work and strive for love at home"
* Watching about 20,000 talking women go silent as an Apostle of the Lord, Jesus Christ walks into the Conference Center to address us. Very moving.

After the conference was over, we went back to my mom and dad's house and met up with my family and my brother and his cute family. It was great to see them. We celebrated with some yummy food and lots of hugs and kisses. Talmage helped the kids make gifts for me. They are beautiful and so sweet. Braden made me a watch (I have needed one for 2 years), Collin and Lila made necklaces and Caleb provided plenty of snuggles. It was a wonderful birthday weekend. Thanks to my dear family for making everything so special. I LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH!

There Is Hope

Today Collin's frog, Speedy, died. He was sad. We had a few tears and hugs, and that helped. What made the real difference, though, was being able to talk to Collin about Jesus Christ, His Atonement and Resurrection. That He knew how Collin was feeling and that there is life after death. I know this probably sounds like making a mountain out of a mole hill, but after our talk, Collin smiled and I was glad.

We had such a silly morning with April Fools. Here are some of the pranks that we pulled on the kids.

1. Covered the boys with toilet paper while they slept. hahaha

2. Confettied lila's room. hahaha

3. Changed Lila's clothes around in her drawers. hahaha

4. Put paper cups full of rice on top of the doors. When they opened the door, splat! hahahaha

5. Told Collin he had no homework because it was a holiday. hahaha

6. Rearranged their bathroom drawers. It took them forever to find their toothbrushes. hahaha

7. Stuffed Braden's shoes with toilet paper so he couldn't get his feet in. hahahaha

8. Tied their coat sleeves in a knot so they couldn't get their hands through. hahahaha

9. Changed the bar stools with normal height chairs. They could barely eat. hahahaha

10. Made "eggs" with yogurt and a dried apricot. hahaha

I HAD SO MUCH FUN PLOTTING AGAINST MY CHILDREN.

Computer Woes

It has been too long since I have written a post! Our main computer, where I download all of our pictures, is on the fritz. Our house produces a ton of electricity - you know when you are walking around in your socks and you go to turn the light on and... ZAP!! ... like with sound and spark? It is pretty impressive. It is sometimes a game at our house to see if we can electrocute each other. Even little Caleb is getting in on the action. I know, we sound like a very loving family. Well, Talmage is the best at it. One time he went to use the mouse on the main computer, touched it, and the mouse literally burned out and the computer had to be restarted. Weird! (Sometimes I wonder if he has a special power that he has been hiding ... like, "Heroes". Seriously, you can see the spark come out of his finger!) Anyway.... that is what we are suspecting happened to our computer... too much electricity! I can't download any pictures and I am about 180 behind. UGH. So, here's to hoping that Talmage can make it to Best Buy to get the "stuff" he needs to fix it, so I can FINALLY get caught up on my blog. I've missed it!

Saying Goodbye To My Childhood Home - Two Months Of Miracles

After living in the same home for 30 years, my parents are moving. Within a month, they sold their home (actually in 2 days) and bought a lovely, new home. In today's market, that is no easy task and so we feel the Lord's tender mercies in all that has occurred. Last week, my sister flew up from Dallas to help pack up. It was busy, but fun as we reminisced some of our childhood memories. We had a 2 day garage sale, packed up 30 years worth of boxes, filled up a dumpster, ate a lot of take-out food and enjoyed being all together for one last time in this house. I say, "house" purposefully, because although this is the house that I grew up in and I have precious memories, it is my family that made it a "home". I love my parents, my sister and my brother so much and I am grateful that we are a family. I am excited for my Mom and Dad to start a new chapter in their lives and look forward to new memories as they make their new house a home where we can all spend time together.

Two Months of Miracles

My newest nephew was born, Braxton Bart Davis. This was a long awaited delivery.
Braxton and his mom regained good health. We are SO GRATEFUL!
My dad got a bad eye infection and got the best possible doctors in Utah
My parents found a new home
My parents sold their home in 2 days
My dad saw the eye doctor before he went on a business trip. They found his retina was becoming detached and so they immediately did surgery on him to save his sight.
My sister's in-laws came to visit her which allowed her to leave her children to come and help pack. Due to my dad's eye surgery he can't lift or bend over. He has been so patient!
The dumpster came 2 days early! Hooray!
Unseasonably warm weather for the entire week.
My parents had to speak in Sacrament and they wrote their talks the night before. They were amazing and I know the Spirit guided them.
My boys sang and the Bishop said he felt strongly that Elder LeGrand Richards was present. LeGrand Richards is our children's great, great grandfather.
My sister and I were singing in sacrament and we needed a pianist. After calling around, we found a lady that could play, already knew the music and had a key to the church so we could practice.
My dad is slowly gaining a little of his eye sight back.

We have been keenly aware of God's presence in our lives. I'm grateful for his tender mercies. I am grateful for adversities that help us to become better people and help us to rely on Him. I am grateful for happy times and I am grateful for families.

Walt Disney World ... Once Upon A Dream

Over Valentine's weekend, Talmage and I went to Walt Disney World ... without the kids. The funny thing is we were there EXACTLY one year ago with our children and we had SO MUCH FUN! We fell in love with it and were hooked. We (joked) how fun it would be to go without the kids ... so we got our chance. Talmage had a CME course at the Grand Floridian, so I tagged along. It was heavenly. Beautiful weather, sleeping in, yummy food, playing like a kid at all the parks and I even painted my toe nails. Such a blast! HOWEVER, we both REALLY missed our children! We were missing the wonder and magic that only children can bring. Thankfully, they were in good hands with Grandma Kathy. THANK YOU, GRANDMA! (Sorry you got snowed in) ;)

We are not usually big football people, but after living in Pittsburgh for 5 years, it rubbed off on us. Pittsburghers are extremely loyal to the Steelers and during football season, you would think that the stores only carried black and gold anything - even chips! I have to admit, it was exciting. We lived there when they won the Superbowl a few years ago and the city was celebrating for months! Well, we no longer live in Pittsburgh, but when we heard they were headed to the Superbowl - AGAIN - we were so excited and had to throw a party in honor of our time in Pittsburgh and all of the wonderful people that we met. Some of our friends who had lived there also came to help celebrate. We had so much fun eating, talking, laughing, eating, watching the game, eating, EATing and EATING! Thanks for helping us celebrate. We had a blast.

Another Week At The Shill's

This is Braden being Apollo, the Roman God of light. He had to act like a statue until somebody came and clapped their hands and brought him to "life" and then he told about himself. It was really fun to watch. The whole gym was decked out.

So, today I spent the morning in a dentist chair for some pretty hefty dental work. This was unlike any dental visit I have ever had. Thankfully, dentist visits have come a LONG way. Remember the days of going to the dentist and staring at a poster on the ceiling to try to keep your mind occupied? Well, not today! The dentist gave me laughing gas (love it) and then they fitted me with these awesome visors that had a little movie theatre inside. While they drilled away, I drifted into Planet Earth. I was falling through the air, skydiving off of cliffs, next I was crawling through caves then swimming in slow motion through the ocean with whales (a personal dream of mine). I roamed the jungles, deserts, and the Arctic. It was a "trip". I could hear mumbling much like how the teacher talks on Charlie Brown, "Bla, bla, bla, bla, bla, bla, bla, bla...." Occasionally I would make out a "turn your head toward me" or "bite down just a little". Sometimes, they would even ask how I was feeling and then I would have to do all that I could to bring my senses together in order to mumble out an "okay". You know, like when you are awoken by the telephone and you try to act like you weren't asleep, but clearly you were? Every bit of my body was heavy, my teeth were heavy, my mind was hazy, it was wild. I'm really glad that today's visit is over and that I am feeling normal again, but it was nice to be in another world while I went to the dentist today.

2009 Shill Family Theme

This year our family has decided to implement a family theme in hopes of keeping us focused and growing together as a family. After much thought and after having a family meeting, we voted unanimously on the following:

Theme: Service

Scripture: Mosiah 2:17 "And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God."

Family Song: "Have I Done Any Good?" I just love these words...

"Have I done any good in the world today? Have I helped anyone in need?

Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?

If not, I have failed indeed.

Has anyone's burden been lighter today because I was willing to share?

Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?

When they needed my help was I there?

There are chances for work all around just now, Opportunities right in our way.

Do not let them pass by, saying, "Sometime I'll try," but go and do something today.

Tis noble of man to work and to give; Love's labor has merit alone.

Only he who does something helps others to live.

To God each good work will be know

Then wake up and do something more than dream of your mansions above.

Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure, A blessing of duty and love."

Our goal:

As a family, do one service project together a month. Here is what we have so far:

* Help prepare meals or clean in the Ronald McDonald House

* Make cards to hand out for the residents in a nursing home

* Bake cookies for the soldiers and send them. Look at www.operationbakinggals.com

* Go through our mountain of toys and donate to a child crisis center

* Make blankets for the babies at Primary Children's Hospital

* Assemble personal hygiene kits for the LDS Church.

* Visit Orem, Ut Library and help read stories to children, dust shelves and clean books.

* Volunteer for the Special Olympics this summer

* Raise money and walk for the March of Dimes

* Help clean loved ones grave stones on Memorial Day

* Any other opportunities that arise or that we think of

Also, I got a small box that we wrapped and each signed (and Lila decorated, of course) and we call it our "Shill Secret Service Box". Everyday, whoever has the box, gets to do a small act of service for someone in the family. Once they have served someone, they leave it on that persons bed for them to be the next person to serve. It has been really fun. Lila is especially excited about it and keeps "stealing" the box so she can do more service. I had to tell her that she doesn't have to have the box to serve, but that the box allows everybody an opportunity.

Small Miracle - Believing in Prayer

Wednesday night, Braden went sledding with the Scouts. Needless to say it was dark and cold. As I dropped him off, I watched as these young men - probably 15 of them - huddled together in the dark of the night to offer a word of prayer before they started their activity. I was touched. As a mother, I hold onto every prayer offered on behalf of my children.

On his last run of the night, Braden hit this HUGE pot hole on the hill and went flying and then sliding on his face for another 20 feet. His face got totally scratched up and his glasses broke and fell off. Quick side note... On Monday, we had just gotten him brand new glasses .... for the umpteenth (sp) time. Thankfully, Braden was alright. His face is pretty scratched up and he is a little sore, but he will be fine. Answered prayer #1.

After recovering, Braden got up and started looking for his glasses. Luckily, he found the frames and 1 lens. The other lens was no where to be found. So, they came home.

Well, the next day (Thursday), after school, Braden and I went to find his missing lens. I googled the hill and found it on the map - another small miracle. Once we got to the hill, Braden and I said a prayer together that we would find his lens. We believe that God is loving and kind and knows our needs. And surely, if he can create worlds, he can show us where Braden's lens is. We started combing the hill which was very large. Honestly, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. After about 20 minutes of looking and knowing that the sun was going down quickly - I offered another prayer. We reinacted his fall again and as I said the words, "If your frames and your other lens were here, then so must your missing lens" I put my hands into the icy snow and pulled out his missing lens. Answered prayer #2. Nothing short of a miracle from a loving God who cares enough to answer the simplest of prayers. We were grateful. I put the lens back into my pocket, we went back to the car and offered a prayer of gratitude.

I am grateful for prayer.

WHAT?

I always regret wearing coats places because once I get to where I am going I then have to keep track of it. They are bulky, heavy and cumbersome. Quite often I will justify not wearing a coat because I am "just going into the car and then into the building - where I won't need it anyway..." Am I the only person who thinks this way? Well, we finally got our first real snow of the winter and we were headed out yesterday morning to church (of all places). IT WAS COLD! And.. still snowing! So, I grabbed my coat and gloves and was thankful that I had something to keep me warm and dry. We walked in the door and there was a coat rack right in front of us. Brilliant! "I will hang up our coats so I don't have to drag them all over the church". After church, we rounded up the kiddo's and started to get all bundled up to go home. After getting everybody ready, it was my turn. BUT... Where is my coat? NO COAT OR GLOVES TO BE FOUND! I searched the halls, all of the coat racks, empty rooms. NO COAT. What? No coat? You mean, somebody STOLE my coat and gloves... and chapstick that was in my pockets, from CHURCH? You've got to be kidding. So, I went home without a coat to keep me warm.

Had somebody asked, I would have gladly given them my coat, but now I feel violated and disappointed. I understand this is a hard time of year and there are so many things to worry about. So, I will turn to the Saviors example of feeding the hungry and clothing the naked and hope that whoever has my coat REALLY needed it and is WARM this Christmas season.

Now, that I am "coatless" I appreciate more than ever a nice warm coat and the choice I had to wear one. This morning while taking Braden to school, I wished I had had that "bulky, heavy, cumbersome coat to keep me warm from the cold. I guess this could be a lesson on appreciating the things that I am blessed with.

Thanksgiving Fun

This year we spent Thanksgiving with my brother and my sister-in-law. We cooked and cooked and cooked! Finally, around 7:00 p.m. we ate! My brother, Brandon, is an awesome cook and made one delicious and beautiful turkey. It was marinated in a brine with maple syrup over night. While it was cooking, he basted it with a cranberry, maple glaze. So moist and flavorful.

A Grammie Nancy Quilt Original

This is Collin's quilt that he was given by his Grammie Nancy. She makes them for all of the grand children.... and there are 43! At Collin's request, Grammie made a fish, frog and turtle quilt. Collin totally loves it and sleeps with it every night. What a treasure.

Lasik Surgery - A Dream Come True

After wearing glasses and contacts for about 18 years, I decided to get my eyes done. What a miracle! Before the surgery, my right eye was -6.00 and my left eye was a -4.75. In other words, I was blind! I couldn't even see the BIG E on my exam. Now, I am so happy to report that my eyes are 20/20 and 20/15. Every morning I am still amazed that I can see when I first open my eyes. It's awesome!

Braden Turns 12!

On October 24, Braden celebrated his 12th birthday. He had a great day! In school, he had two huge projects due and he was so excited to turn them in - isn't it always such a good feeling to be prepared?! One of his projects was a power point presentation on "Egyptians". He went the extra mile and made an interactive game while giving his report. It was very inventive and clever. His teacher was so impressed with it, that she is taking it to the district to show what he came up with. He was SO excited!
That night, we went to a steak house for dinner. He was so excited to order an "adult" meal. And... of course it was a big, juicy, steak. We went home to open presents and have cake and ice cream. It was a great day.

Between Food Network and all of the amazing food blogs out there, I have become obsessed with FOOD! I think it is so fun to create something that not only taste good, but looks pretty too. Don't get my wrong, I am no expert - not even close, but I do love it. The only caveat is I can't stand cooking when my kitchen is not clean and with 4 kids running around, having a clean kitchen is easier said than done... so there is extra motivation to have a nice, clean, tidy kitchen. It makes me feel like my creativity can flow so much more, otherwise I feel
frustrated :(

Homemade Applesauce

My mom came and helped me ....okay, made for me, homemade applesauce. I had every intention of doing the work, but then one child needed to go here, the next child needed to go there ... etc. I sure didn't plan very well. Also, I had NO idea that you had to buy your mason jars early or you can't find them anywhere ... not even Walmart! Finally, after many phone calls, I found the LAST case of jars at a small, local grocery store. Just what we needed to finish the job. Although I was in and out a lot, I will always cherish the memories of spending a day in the kitchen with my mom. Thanks mom!

General Conference Weekend

I love General Conference weekend! Lots of together time, foot rubs and fort building. It was so nice to be together and listen to inspired words and council from our church leaders.

This year, Braden went to the priesthood session with Talmage. He turns 12 on October 24th! He looked so grown-up in his new suit.

My Mom's Birthday

October 3, 2008 we celebrated my mom's birthday. We spent the morning at Gardner Village and had so much fun walking around all of the cute shops that we decided to just get a yummy piece of fudge and skip lunch so that we could keep window shopping. They have all of their cute witches on display. Our Favorite witch was in sitting in an outhouse, reading the paper with a sign posted, "Witchy Poo" We cracked up! What a fun day we had. Later that night, we went to "Epic" for dinner and savored delicious crab cakes, and the best salad EVER.

Collin broke his first board in his Tae Kwon Do class. He was so excited!

Peach Coffee Cake With Cream

Wow! Talk about comfort food. This was so yummy. My neighbor gave me a big bushel of peaches and so I have been experimenting in the kitchen with new "peach" recipes. This is a delicious Coffee Cake that has a layer of peaches in the center. After it was done cooking, I dished it up with some more fresh peaches on top and a little cream. DELICIOUS! This pan was empty within minutes!

Off To School

The first day my boys rode their bikes to school, my heart broke. They are getting so big. It was a very strange feeling sending them off into the world all by themselves. I've always thought that as a mother I teach and then watch. This was a hard one to watch. After having lessons on bike safety, how to chain up your bike, stranger danger etc. they were more then ready, I just had to let go. Easier said than done! Luckily, there are a ton of children that ride their bikes to school and so they just joined in with the rest. They LOVED it! The best part of the day for me was when I looked out the window and saw my boys riding up the hill to our home. I couldn't get my hands on them fast enough.

This is the house that we are currently renting. We LOVE having the mountains as our back drop and from the front porch, our eyes can see forever. It is so beautiful. Every night we watch the most amazing sunsets. Our neighbors have been so kind and welcoming. We are really starting to feel at home.

A Week of Discoveries

Braden has discovered:
* To do a 3 second wheely on his Rip Stick.
* To wear his safety gear while riding the Rip Stick. This after two near visits to the ER!
* Being able to walk to school is really COOL!

Collin has discovered:
* To kick through a practice board in Tae Kwon Do.
* That there is a right way and a wrong way to pick your nose.
* When I go shopping with mom, I can usually get something that I want.

Lila has Discovered:
* That she will eat blueberries in her wheat pancakes if I chop them up first. Hurray!
* She is going to absolutely love Kindergaren and her new teacher, Mrs. Le Baron!
(not so much a discovery, but something funny Lila said during a prayer this week.... "and please bless that we can obey our parents ..... sometimes!"

Caleb has Discovered:
* To walk proficiently. (He's only 15 months ...)
* Using his fork is a much more fun and cleaner way to eat!
* To crawl straight up to our bedroom, into the bathroom, climb up to the sink and turn
the water on, grab the closest brush, get it wet and comb his hair!
* When he looks in the mirror, he sees someone really cute and wants to have a fun
conversation with that person. So funny.
